This is part of page 56 of the government's Y3 Literacy Intervention Programme:
| Quote: |
Strategy check
Review strategies for tackling an unfamiliar word: leaving the word out, reading on to the end of the sentence, thinking of a word that would make sense and checking the letters and phonemes.
Independent reading
The children read, applying the strategy that you have practised. Monitor two or three children by listening to them read a page. Can they work out unfamiliar words by reading on to the end of the sentence? Do they use phonic knowledge to check that the word is correct?
Review
Give children feedback on progress towards their reading target. Highlight examples of children reading on to the end of the sentence whey they were stuck on a word, suggesting a word that made sense, checking the letters and phonemes and correcting if necessary. |
This is part of the multi-cueing guessing words strategies which are damaging so many children.
Such reading strategies dominated the NLS Year 1 intervention programme 'Early Literacy Support' and the Reading Reform Foundation called for its withdrawal after Lord Prior asked questions in the House of Lords about the lack of comparative testing.
Well - this call was not responded to in any shape, size or form and now we see an extension of the guessing unfamiliar words strategies in this Y3 material.
Is this how everyone would like their children and grandchildren to be taught? |

I can't bear it!
"Do they use their phonic knowledge to check that the word is correct?"
That's AFTER they've had a good guess at it, is it? What complete garbage!
My kids use their phonic knowledge to READ the word, then we check to make sure they understand what it means.
Just what planet are these people living on? |
